Is Being a Hypochondriac Attention Seeking Behavior?

If you have a hypochondriac in your life, but you don’t have hypochondria, it may be a hard thing to understand. You may wonder why the hypochondriac in your life can’t stop worrying about their symptoms. Even after being told by a doctor (or multiple doctors) that they are healthy. You may also wonder why they keep talking about their symptoms. Even after it’s already proven that their symptoms are not indicative of a serious health condition. At some point, you may even wonder whether or not being a hypochondriac is attention seeking behavior.

Hypochondria is a chronic mental illness that people can’t control. So, in that sense, being a hypochondriac is not attention seeking behavior. There are some people who may struggle with hypochondriac tendencies who may have some aspects of their behavior as attention seeking. However, some aspects of their behavior may be non-attention seeking. There are also some people who struggle with a mental illness, called Munchausen’s Syndrome. People with Munchausen’s Syndrome do fabricate or induce symptoms within themselves to garner attention. Please note that these are all very different circumstances. We will focus solely on whether or not being a diagnosed hypochondriac is attention seeking behavior.

Here are some points to consider when looking into whether or not being a hypochondriac is attention seeking behavior or not:

Hypochondriacs truly believe that they are ill.

You have to remember that hypochondriacs truly believe that they are ill. They may have all the symptoms of a certain illness and be convinced that they have it. They may go to the doctor frequently and be very anxious about their health. Some hypochondriacs may be annoying to others because they are always talking about their health problems. However, most hypochondriacs are not seeking attention and are genuinely concerned about their health.

A hypochondriac may be seeking attention from others in order to receive validation that they are indeed ill.

A hypochondriac may be seeking attention from others in order to receive validation that they are indeed ill. This attention seeking behavior may be a result of the hypochondriac feeling insecure about their health and needing reassurance from others. Additionally, the hypochondriac may feel like they are not being taken seriously by their loved ones or medical professionals. They may be seeking validation that their symptoms are real. While the attention seeking behavior of a hypochondriac can be frustrating for those around them, it is important to remember that the hypochondriac is usually not intentionally trying to be disruptive. Instead, the hypochondriac is seeking help and reassurance about the illness they believe that they have.

A hypochondriac may be experiencing genuine symptoms but may also be subconsciously exaggerating them for attention.

While the symptoms may be real, the hypochondriac may be subconsciously embellishing them. Or, they may be outright fabricating them in order to receive attention from others. This attention seeking behavior can be harmful to the individual and to those around them, as it can lead to unnecessary medical procedures, wasted time and resources, and even undue stress and anxiety. If you suspect that someone you know may be a hypochondriac, it is important to talk to them about their symptoms and help them get the help they need.
